Cecily van der May
20 • April 12, 1997 • female • human • blood • bounty hunter
brown Hair • blue Eyes • 5'7" • 125 lb
Appearance,
At five feet and seven inches, Cecily is tall for a woman, and she is athletically built. Her arms, legs, and abdomen are all well-toned. Her skin is unusually pale, a result of her line of work typically requiring her to sleep during the day and be on the hunt at night. Her sharp jawline, thin nose, and prominent cheekbones give her the appearance of maturity and toughness, while her wide light blue eyes and full pink lips add a layer of gentle femininity. Those eyes are usually surrounded by darkness, either from exhaustion or dark eye shadow. Her face tends to be very serious. When she smiles, one might find it more sinister than joyful.
When she is working, Cecily wears a full body suit with padded armor over vulnerable body parts and fitted slots to hold her weapons and utilities. In her free time, she opts for simple and practical clothing, such as a blouse and jeans or a skirt if she's feeling particularly girly, which isn't very often. However, she never leaves the house without some very choice footwear: usually high, lace-up boots that can conceal a weapon.

Spells and Abilities,
Bloody Mask - This is an interesting and unique spell which only users of blood magic can employ. The user makes a sacrifice of his or her own blood and then smears it on his or her face. From there, the user is enabled to literally change their hair and facial features in any way that they wish, masking their appearance or making themselves look like another person entirely. This spell does not affect the appearance of a person's body or voice, and so for example a man disguising himself as a woman or vice versa is not advised. In addition, this spell requires great concentration on the part of the caster. The person must envision *exactly* how it is they wish to look by the end of the spell, for the adjustments needed are specific. This spell is not permanent. In general after about 12 hours the effects will begin to fade, returning the caster to their normal appearance. In addition to this, use of this spell too often can cause horrific results. It can in fact age the person in question's face, causing them to look older and decrepit upon returning to their normal appearance. While extreme overuse of this spell is required for this to happen, it is a possibility. Reports say that the change in appearance is extremely painful, though the pain is fleeting.
Blood Tracking - This is a blood magic spell which requires not only a blood sacrifice from the caster, but a sample of the target's blood. To use this spell, the caster mixes their own sacrificed blood with the sample from the target, usually in a bowl or some kind of container, then drinks the mixed concoction. This allows them to track the user's blood, and find their target no matter how far away they are. Unlike the sigil tracking spell, Blood Tracking does not lose its potency based on distance from the target, making it a much more effective tracking spell. Interestingly, if the target in question can use blood magic, the connection works both ways, and the target will become aware he or she is being tracked, and be able to track in return.
Blood Binding - This is a combat blood magic spell, similar to Bleeding Pool in both form and function. It's purpose is capture and immobilize a target, and can not be used to kill. The caster makes a blood sacrifice, most usually by making a cut along their arm, and then flings the sacrificed blood at the target. Upon doing so, the blood seems to congeal and expand into what could almost be described as ropes. On contact with a target these ropes wrap around them and squeeze tight, transfixing them in place. The binds are incredibly durable and strong, making them very hard to break through normal physical means. In addition, the strength at which they squeeze can be increased and decreased by the caster, allowing them to be used to break bones or deal damage to keep the target immobilized. However, their downfall comes in when the target in question struggles. The strength of the binds is in fact directly connected to the physical energy of the caster. The more the target struggles and strains against the binds, the more strain is put on the caster and his or her physical energy.

Personality,
There's not much that Cecily cares about these days. She intentionally drowns herself in work, adrenaline, and the noise of the world to keep herself from thinking about anything long enough to care for it. Though she has a heart, it has been deeply buried in so many layers of baggage that it's fairly easy for her to forget it exists. However, the right person pushing the right buttons just might be able to bring it back out, which would probably result in all of Cecily's repressed grief and guilt to rain down on her at once in a suffocating and devastating manner. For now, she is the definition of a cold-blooded woman. She makes friends only for her convenience and is always ready to throw them under the bus when they cease to be useful.
Cecily is very calm, confident, and collected, and it shows in her mannerisms. Her face is always serious and not very reactive. The most dramatic expression she is capable of is probably a raised eyebrow or an eye roll when her bounty tries to run. Her sense of humor is very deadpan as well. She'll make fun of people's stupidity to their faces without them noticing. Sarcasm is her first language.
Despite being cold-hearted, Cecily surprisingly comes off as friendly enough, since it's not in her interest to have more enemies than necessary. She's not opposed to having people around and making friends; they just generally don't mean much to her. (Again, the right person pushing the right buttons could get underneath her skin and change that.) In fact, at the end of a long day or night of work, her way of unwinding isn't going home to a soft bed. Instead, she likes to go to the noisiest club in town, close her eyes, dance, and lose herself in all the noise so that she won't have to think about the lives she's ruined or her apparent lack of a soul.
Cecily is her own worst enemy. She hates that she is an unfeeling, cold-hearted villain, and she wishes to be better. However, that would require her to let all of her feelings back in, and she doesn't believe she has the strength to handle that, so she continues to mute everything with a decadent and dangerous lifestyle.
History,
There's a reason that Cecily van der May is fearless in her work as a bounty hunter. Her father, too, was an accomplished bounty hunter, and he taught Cecily all of the tricks of the trade. Mason van der May was well known among law enforcement circles for his successful wrangling of even the most elusive and dangerous criminals. No thief, drug dealer, murderer, etc. would be successful in his or her flight from the law if Mason was in charge of the chase. Mason's reputation meant more to him than anything, except the thrill of the job. He lived for the hunt: the chase, the adrenaline, the glory. Cecily admired him greatly. Throughout her relatively normal and boring childhood, she always had one claim to coolness when she pointed out her father. Mason wasn't the only parent that Cecily loved; her sweet, loving mother, Karen, was her best friend.
Cecily's relationship with her father changed entirely when she hit puberty and was quite the beautiful teenager. Mason began to sexually abuse Cecily, taking great pleasure in it since her struggle reminded him of the rush of chasing down and subduing a criminal. The rape was infrequent at first, but it quickly became Mason's punishment of choice for whenever Cecily failed to do a chore on time, or got a less-than-perfect grade in school, or looked at him funny, or anything. Cecily's feelings towards her father turned to terror. She said nothing, fearing that if she spoke a word of it to anyone, he would keep his threat: he would give her a chance to run, then he would hunt and kill her just like the criminals he hunted for a living, and he would enjoy it. Cecily contemplated leaving, but she had nowhere to go, and she wondered how her mother would cope with the solitude, left alone with Mason, who was more and more consumed by his work everyday.
On the day that glamour failed, Mason caught his first glimpse of a vampire while he was sitting in a bar, and he knew exactly what the next stage of his career would be. Supernaturals were dangerous and obviously needed to be hunted and killed. Mason couldn't wait to come home and tell his beautiful wife about the next chapter of his adventures. Imagine his surprise when he came home and found a werewolf in his bedroom, his daughter kneeling by the bed in tears of confusion. Ruled by his love of the pursuit and his need for glory, Mason's first instinct was to grab his shotgun, and despite Cecily's incessant screams of "It's mom! It's mom," he started shooting. Karen immediately bolted for the door. Having been married to the man for decades, Karen knew all of Mason's tricks. She knew exactly what not to do when skipping town, and she proved to be the one most impossible bounty that Mason ever hunted. The challenge, in additional to their history, provided too much allure for Mason to resist, and he vowed to find and kill Karen, dedicating all of his time and energy from that point on to the pursuit of his former wife. Watching this devastated Cecily, and one day, she asked if she should run away before he killed her, too. After all, she was Karen's daughter and must have had the werewolf gene inside her.
"Don't bother. You're adopted," were the only words that Mason offered as he left the house for the day. Seventeen years old at the time, Cecily realized what she had to do. Though she still had nowhere to go, she quit school and left home, living on the streets for a time. She also knew that she had to find her mother before her father did, which meant she had to become an even better bounty hunter than Mason. Her father's reputation allowed her to find work in the field, despite being young and relatively inexperienced, and she quickly proved to be just as gifted as her father in the work and just as merciless as well. Throwing herself into the work so that she might stand a chance, Cecily had to sacrifice her social life, and she lost touch with every friend she had, believing that none of them mattered as much as her mother, but it still wasn't enough. Her father, having decades of experience on her, found Karen and killed her a day before Cecily found where her mother was living, just in time to discover the body of the last person she was living for.
Since then, Cecily has been numbing the pain of her past by drowning herself in work and whatever else she can use to fill her time without actually giving a shit about anything. She lives in a small apartment by herself just outside of Hollowhill Grove and is often charged with the task of hunting down a supernatural who has fled the concrete wall. To level the playing field of this game, Cecily has taken up blood magic. The bounties on supernaturals are generally "dead or alive," but as numb and cold as Cecily has become, she could never be a killer like her father, so she has always brought her catches back to Hollowhill Grove in cuffs... with one exception. The one life she has taken by accident, a female vampire who proved to be quite the runner, gives Cecily one more reason to mute all her memories and feelings by sinking into role of an unfeeling, cold-blooded hunter.
